The areas most affected by power cuts were counties Limerick, Galway and Mayo.

In Dublin an emergency operation began when hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes when the River Liffey burst its banks in the highest tides since 1924. The estimated cost of the damage to businesses is in the region of €20m.

In Dingle, Co Kerry ten Spanish fisherman had to be winched to safety from their Irish registered boat when it hit rocks in gale force winds.

Areas of flooding are starting to recede but Met Eireann are predicting more high winds of up to 60mph in some places.
