Spencer Tracy once hit Katharine Hepburn in the face during a drunken row, a new book claims.

But the actress refused to break up with her married lover and instead tried to help him with his drink problem, according to the biography Kate Remembered.

“If I had left we both would have been miserable,” she told writer Scott Berg before her death last month.

The book tells how Tracy smacked Hepburn with the back of his hand when she tried to put him to bed at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.

He was too drunk to remember the incident the next day and she never reminded him of it.

Hepburn considered getting Tracy to attend Alcoholics Anonymous but decided it would be impossible to keep it secret, the book said.

The biography is based on conversations between Hepburn and Mr Berg over 20 years.

It was published in the US today after the author respected the screen legend’s wish that it should only be released after her death.

The book also says that Hepburn posed for nude photos when she was at college which she always feared would resurface.
