Officials in Dublin are planning to open the next section of the M50 motorway next August, even though a portion of the road due to be built on the site of Carrickmines Castle has been blocked by legal action.

The motorway will be opened with a gap at the site of the centuries-old medieval castle.

Fine Gael TD Olivia Mitchell said Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council was left with little option because of fears of compensation demands from the company selected to build the road.
