Punch-Drunk Love
Paul Thomas Anderson
Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Well, would you believe it; Adam Sandler as a charming, suitably subdued delight in a class romantic-comedy!
Sandler has, until now (and possibly in The Wedding Planner), shown himself to be a performer tuned into the baser instincts of human behaviour; a lewd, unfunny nurk!
So suddenly he shows here that when given a good, sharp script he can produce a well-rounded performance which surprises us .
Anderson wrote the film with Sandler in unlikely mind. It's the story of a put-upon salesman whose life is fairly dull and meaningless until he finds love with a nice lady (the always-excellent Watson).
A simple enough idea, but unlike that of Bullock and Grant the chemistry between Sandler and Watson works to perfection and brings us 90 minutes of warming good feelings.
