Darts: Manley beaten by Beaton

The top seed of the Stan James World Matchplay bowed out last night in the

opening game of the tournament.

World Ranked number one Peter 'One Dart' Manley was first up on the oche to face former World Champion Steve 'The Adonis' Beaton in what was always predicted to be a battle to the end.

And the crowd were not disappointed.

One Dart started in menacing style and taking advantage of early nerves from

Beaton and took the first leg against the throw.

Beaton quickly regrouped and robbed Manley of his own throwing advantage and they were all square at 1-1.

Manley broke Beaton again in the third but managed to hold his own and

opened up a 3-1 advantage.

He didn't have it for long though as Beaton checked out in the 5th leg with 76 and followed that with an outstanding 121 out to level things at 3-3.

Before the second break in play, Manley grabbed another two leg lead to make

it 6-4, but the breather did Beaton good and he came out in the 11th leg with a 13 darter to put the pressure on One Dart at 6-5.

It went with the throw in the next three legs until the 14th when Beaton eventually grabbed back the leg he had lost to Manley earlier in the match to make it 7-7.

It was heartbreak however for Beaton in the next leg when on 136 to take the

lead for the first time, he busted on his third dart, having already hit treble 20, 20.

That let Manley in and the score at the third break was 8-7. Even worse for

Beaton - it was against his own throw.

The risk for Beaton was, that the bust would put him off his stride, but the Adonis kept his cool and grabbed a leg back against the throw with a 111 check out.

Beaton then took the lead for the first time in the 17th leg, holding his throw to make it 8-9 before wrapping it up with a 66 out, T10, D18.

And that was that for Manley, out again at the first hurdle in Blackpool.

Add that to his first round exit at Purfleet and the number one seed will be

wondering what he has to do to win a major competition.

For Beaton the second round beckons and with the scalp of the world's number

one under his belt, will go forward with genuine confidence.
