Overthrown Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev said today that he is outside the country and denied he had resigned.

Overthrown Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev said today that he is outside the country and denied he had resigned.

It was unclear from where Akayev was speaking, a day after he fled the capital Bishkek as thousands of protesters stormed his government’s headquarters. He had been reported to have fled with his family to neighbouring Kazakhstan

“My current stay outside the country is temporary,” Akayev said. “Rumours of my resignation are deliberate, malicious lies.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said today he would not object if Akayev wanted to go to Russia.
