ICTU warns outsourcing could cost 38,000 Irish jobs

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has warned that tens of thousands of Irish workers could face unemployment due to the outsourcing of jobs to foreign countries.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has warned that tens of thousands of Irish workers could face unemployment due to the outsourcing of jobs to foreign countries.

In a policy paper published today, the organisation has predicted that up to 38,000 jobs could be moved to low-cost locations abroad in the coming years.

Congress wants the Government to fund improved retraining for workers who could be affected by this outsourcing.

"Those people have to be looked after," ICTU general secretary David Begg said today. "We do have to invest heavily in re-skilling people and do it in a planned way."
