The IRA has issued a statement apologising to families for suffering caused by the murder and secret burial of several suspected British army informers during the Troubles in the North.

However, in its statement today, the IRA insisted that it was not responsible for all those who "disappeared during its armed struggle".

The IRA has already admitted killing nine suspected informers and burying their bodies in secret locations.

It said today it was sorry for the suffering caused to the families of the victims and pledged to do all it could to help retrieve the remains of the five victims whose bodies have still not been found.

The IRA statement said the organisation believed it had tried to rectify the injustice by helping locate the bodies of four of the so-called "Disappeared" in the past four years.
