A 17-year-old was jailed for life tonight for the stabbing to death of a schoolboy for his mobile phone.

Christopher Dunne, whose mother held his hand as he was sentenced, was also given 13 years with four suspended for the robbery of 17-year-old Alan Higgins in October 2002.

Judge Henry Abbot described Dunne, from Millwood Villas, Kilbarrack, Dublin, as the leader of the group of three teenagers who engaged in a crime spree before attacking Alan as he left UCI Cinema in Coolock, Co Dublin.

The victim’s distraught mother, surrounded by family, sat further down the bench beside the three teenagers as they were sentenced in the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

Judge Abbot said: “Mr Dunne does not seem to have got the message that crime does not pay.”

He added that Dunne had caused “mayhem, tragedy and destruction” on that night and had a strong ability to influence other people.
