A 28-year-old Somali man has appeared in court in Co Kildare charged with the murder of his 20-month-old son.

Yusef Alli covered his head as he was taken into Naas District Court.

Baby Nathan Alli was taken to hospital from his home in Clane at around 4.30am yesterday but later died.

Post mortem results showed the child died from blows to the head and body.

Garda Sgt Kevin Brosnan told the court that when charged, Mr Alli replied: "I don't know, I have nothing to say. I don't remember anything, I'm not in good stead. I'm so upset, my son is dead. I'm sorry it happened."

Granting legal aid, Judge William Early remanded the accused in custody to appear again in court on April 26.
