Carlos Sainz moved into the overall lead of the Dakar Rally after stage five today as overnight leader Stephane Peterhansel was delayed by transmission problems to his BMW.
The Spaniard finished the stage from Copiapo to Antofagasta in second place, two minutes 10 seconds behind American Mark Miller.
Nasser Al-Attiyah finished third to complete a Volkswagen one-two-three.
The same three drivers occupy with top three places in the overall standings too, with Al-Attiyah second, 4mins 37secs behind Sanz, and Miller 9.39m off the pace in third.
Frenchman Peterhansel slipped to 10th place on the leaderboard, 2:4.49 behind the leader, after a frustrating day.
"It is obviously very disappointing for the whole team," Peterhansel's team boss Sven Quandt said on www.autosport.com.
"Stephane was driving superbly and then we have this unfortunate mechanical problem.
"This was a new prop shaft that we had fitted last night and it failed after 120km today. It is so difficult to drive this stage in two-wheel drive and just reaching the finish without dropping too much time is an achievement in itself."
France's Cyril Despres held on to his lead in the bike class, finishing the stage second behind Chilean Francisco Lopez Contardo.
Vladimir Chagin kept hold of the lead in the truck rankings with a second-place finish behind fellow Russian Firdaus Kabirov.
Argentina's Marcos Patronelli continued to lead the quad entries after victory in today's stage.
