Interviews for the vacant Scotland manager’s job will begin next week, SFA chief executive Gordon Smith has confirmed.
Smith aims to have a successor to Alex McLeish in place by the end of the month with a training camp pencilled in for early February.
It is understood the SFA have a four-man shortlist consisting of Motherwell boss Mark McGhee, Celtic coach Tommy Burns, Southampton manager George Burley and Graeme Souness.
Former Motherwell and Derby boss Billy Davies also continues to be linked with the post.
Smith told the News of the World: “No-one has been interviewed yet but we’re making progress and hope to start the process in the coming days.
“All the people we will speak to are Scots, although we did have approaches from non-Scots.
“But I felt at the moment it was better to have a Scot for the job.”
Burns is favourite and some conspiracy theorists believe the SFA will appoint someone strongly associated with Celtic after the two previous incumbents, Walter Smith and McLeish, were former Rangers bosses.
But SFA chief Smith, a former Rangers player, said: “Those ideas are total nonsense. The next manager of Scotland will be the best person for the job.”
