Martin Scorsese returns to form with yet another gangster movie, but this time he may finally break his Oscar duck with The Departed (EIV, €24.99), a searing drama centred around mobster Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) and cops Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon).
One has infiltrated the Costello gang, and the other is a Costello agent sent to keep his boss informed about the police.
Scorsese’s direction elevates this way above many of his films, even my favourite, Goodfellas.
The two-disc edition boasts additional scenes with introductions by Scorsese, a look at his Little Italy influences, Scorsese talking about himself, and a profile of Frank Costello.
