Scotland 6 Fiji 14 HT
Rupeni Caucau underlined his status as the most exciting player at the tournament by scoring two tries and leaving Scotland 40 minutes from World Cup elimination as Fiji took a 14-6 at half-time in the pool match in Sydney.
Scotland relied heavily on some early scrambling defence and then the boot of Chris Paterson as they struggled to cope with the explosive Fijians.
Caucau scored the first try after 11 minutes and his second, four minutes before the break, torpedoed a Scottish revival built on solid scrumming and two penalties by Paterson.
Cameron Mather was the Scottish hero just after the 20-minute mark when everyone except Caucau stood and watched a drop-goal attempt.
Caucau nearly got the ball down but Mather was able to win the scramble behind the line to keep a jittery Scotland in the game.
It was not until the 24th minute that Scotland were able to start applying any real pressure of their own as they built phases inside the Fijian half, culminating in a penalty against the South Sea Islanders for coming in to a ruck offside.
Paterson kicked the penalty to pull his side back to within four points of the Fijians.
That seemed to settle the Scots and moments later Paterson collected clean line-out ball and peeled off a superb deep kick into Fijian territory.
They then snaffled possession at a scrappy line-out and won a penalty, which Paterson kicked to make it a one-point game.
Caucau was in defensive action just after the half-our mark, hammering Metcalfe to jolt the ball loose then coming in a touch late on Danielli after the Scotland winger had counter-attacked down the right.
Scotland should have grabbed a try in the 32nd minute when a break by Paterson enable a sweeping backline attack to the left, terminated only when Ruivadra was able to knock the ball loose as Metcalfe bore down on the line.
The second try came against the run of play as Fiji mounted a counter-attack, number eight Alifereti Doviverata and Koli Sewabu giving Caucau possession in his own half.
The winger went round both James McLaren then Metcalfe for a superb individual effort, which Little converted to make it 14-6.
