The general election in the North will get underway at 7am when the polling booths open up to the 1.5 million people who are entitled to vote in the parliamentary and local council elections.

There are 18 seats in the Westminster parliament and 26 district councillor positions up for grabs.

The outcome could have long-term implications for the future of the peace process in the North.

Voters in the North are expected to flock to the polling stations despite expected low turnouts in England and in the referendum in Ireland.

The main areas of interest in today’s election will be the battles between the pro and anti-agreement parties on the unionist side and between the SDLP and Sinn Fein on the nationalist.

Counting will not begin until Friday morning in the general election, while votes in the district council election will not be counted until Monday.
