Gilmore: Anglo pay out 'bit of a sickener'

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said it is "a bit of a sickener" that unsecured bondholders at the former Anglo Irish Bank will today be paid back €1.2bn.

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said it is "a bit of a sickener" that unsecured bondholders at the former Anglo Irish Bank will today be paid back €1.2bn.

The pay out is due today despite calls from the Opposition for the Government not to honour the debt.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny was adamant yesterday that he had no intention of defaulting on payments to bondholders.

Mr Gilmore said that although it is not an attractive prospect, it is still the right thing to do.

The Tánaiste said: "It's a bit of a sickener to have to pay it, there is no doubt about that.

"What we have inherited, all of the banks' debts, is a huge problem. It is an approach we have to take to ensure that the taxpayer gets the best possible deal here."
