An Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza killed one person early today, Palestinian officials said.

The army said it identified a group of militants planting an explosive and targeted them from the air.

Hospital officials said one person was killed and another injured, but could not immediately identify the casualties.

Palestinian security officials said the target was a group of militants near a cement factory in eastern Jabaliya.

It was the first Israeli airstrike in several days. In recent weeks Israel has struck hard against militants in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 60, following heavy rocket fire into southern Israeli towns.

In the West Bank, an 85-year-old Palestinian man was killed and seven members of his family were injured in an Israeli raid, a hospital said.

The army said it identified a group of militants planting an explosive in northern Gaza and targeted them from the air.

The Islamic militant Hamas, the senior partner in the Palestinian government, said in a radio broadcast that the dead man belonged to the group.

It was the first Israeli airstrike since Friday. In recent weeks Israel has struck hard against militants in Gaza, killing more than 60 people, in retaliation for heavy rocket fire into southern Israeli towns.

In the West Bank town of Hebron, Israeli soldiers who entered a house on an arrest raid were attacked by Palestinians who threw a gas canister and other household objects at them, the military said.

One of the Palestinians grabbed a soldier's rifle, forcing troops to open fire, the military said.

Hospital officials said 85-year-old Yehia al-Jabari was killed and seven members of his family were injured, including his 65-year old wife, who was in serious condition, hospital officials said.

Maan, a local news agency, said troops apparently were looking for the man's son, who was wanted by Israel.

Israel said two wanted men inside the house were arrested.
