A new form of plastic bullet is being deployed in the North from today.

The British Government has said it is a safer version, but this is being disputed by civil rights groups who say the weapon should be banned altogether.

An estimated 100,000 bullets have been used in the North over the past 30 years causing the deaths of 17 people and injuries to hundreds of others.

However, the RUC has said that they are necessary for riot control.

International reports have shown in the past that the bullets are often fired at too high a velocity and veer off target.

Derry man Richard Moore, who was blinded for life by a rubber bullet when he was 10-years old called for all people in the North to call for an end to the weapon.
