Unidentified gunmen opened fire on an observation post manned by British paratroopers in the international security force in Afghanistan early today, their commander said.

It was the first time the peacekeepers have come under fire, he said.

The soldiers returned fire, and a dead person was later found near the scene, said Britain’s Colonel Richard Barrons, the peacekeepers’ chief of staff.

He did not report any injuries to the six paratroopers, who were ‘‘extracted’’ from their post following the exchange of fire.
