Alan Shearer praised Newcastle's persistence after they kicked-off their Premiership campaign with a resounding 4-0 win over West Ham.
Shearer struck 14 minutes from time but it was Lomana Lua Lua who made the initial breakthrough.
He slotted past David James on 61 minutes and then added a second 12 minutes later, with Nolberto Solano claiming a late fourth to complete the rout.
"We knew if we kept passing we just needed something to drop our way," Shearer told Sky Sports.
"We kept on putting the pressure on and we thought if we keep putting the pressure on it will come.
"We got the little bit of a break and it was a great finish from Lomana through the keeper's legs, and once we got one everyone grew in confidence and it was just a matter of how many we were going to get."
Bobby Robson was pleased with the way his side continued to press after being held for an hour.
"We were very much in control," he said.
"Without [Paolo] di Canio and [Frederic] Kanoute, they looked as though they wanted to come for a point and not lose.
"So the game was always for us and at half-time I said just keep going and if we get a goal we might win 2-0 and we won comfortably in the end.
"After the goal came, it was not Hallelujah, but it went our way.
"In the second half we stepped it up a bit and with some delightful goals."
