Copper to shine at Southwell

Jim Boyle has his string in fine form at present and Copperbottomed can add another victory to his tally in the Packed Full Of Fun That’s Pontins Claiming Stakes at Southwell.

Jim Boyle has his string in fine form at present and Copperbottomed can add another victory to his tally in the Packed Full Of Fun That’s Pontins Claiming Stakes at Southwell.

Lightly-raced, he has a victory to his name over seven furlongs at Wolverhampton.

And as that is his ideal distance, it was pleasing to see him run so well over a furlong shorter last time out.

There is no doubt he is not the most straightforward of characters, he wore eyeshields and blinkers last time, but the way he was running on suggested this step back up to seven furlongs will see him in a better light.

Noel Wilson is another small yard going well and his Stolt can follow up a recent win in the If It’s Showtime It’s Pontin’s Time Handicap.

He beat Memphis Man, who reopposes again, by just a short head but the selection is better off at the weights this time so should confirm those placings.

The rejuvenated Turko can land the richest race ever run at Leicester, the Jelson Homes Quality House Builders Since 1889 Chase.

Trained by Paul Nicholls, the six-year-old has always been highly regarded at Ditcheat and he was not beaten far by Detroit City in the Triumph Hurdle a couple of years ago.

Nicholls repeatedly stated though that his future was always going to lie over fences and his first few runs over the bigger obstacles suggested he was destined for the top.

But the grey was 20 lengths in arrears of Denman in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase before he was pulled up behind Aces Four at Aintree.

This year was never going to be easy as a second-season chaser but his run in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby was slightly puzzling to say the least.

It looked as if he had broken down passing the stands on the first circuit and Nicholls feared the worst but the injury was not too serious and he bolted up at Sandown in a decent event last time.

He goes well fresh, is suited by the conditions of the race and should go very well.

Gold Medallist made a very pleasing comeback from a long lay-off at Cheltenham last month and as long as he does not ’bounce’, he should take a world of beating in the Leicester Annual Members Novices’ Chase.

Gold Medallist was once a decent performer on the level, beating St Leger winner Brian Boru in a Group Two in France for David Elsworth.

Sent to Philip Hobbs for a hurdling campaign in the 2004-05 season, he quickly emerged as one of the best around.

The eight-year-old was off the track for nearly three years before his reappearance at Cheltenham last month and it was a performance full of promise.

Up against Tidal Bay, unquestionably the best novice chaser seen this season as he heads the betting for both events he is eligible for at the Festival, he was only beaten five lengths when fitness became an issue.

As long as he is over those exertions we may be looking at a realistic contender for the Royal & SunAlliance Chase after this.

Up at Sedgefield it may be worth taking a chance on Gardasee on his first attempt over fences.

He was a really promising novice hurdler once upon a time but lost his form dramatically for Tom Tate.

He was rejuvenated back on the level though and won twice in the summer before moving to Kahlil Burke.

A scopey sort, if he takes to fences he could run up a sequence, starting with the Sendrig Construction Novices’ Chase.
