The 25-year-old midfielder, currently on bail after being charged with assault and affray, was drafted in along with Emre, who returned after a three-match ban.

David Rozehnal, who has joined Lazio on loan, and James Milner made way, and there was a seat on the bench for former Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka after his calf problem.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate was without injured duo Tuncay Sanli and Mido, while record signing Afonso Alves is still awaiting a visa, but Emanuel Pogatetz and Lee Cattermole were recalled.
