Tonight's TV Tips

Tune in to TV3 tonight to watch a documentary relating the heartbreaking story of Savita Halappanavar whose death in an Irish maternity ward, when suffering a miscarriage, caused outrage around the world.

Tonight's TV Tips

REALITY: Hector Goes...Digging (RTE One, 9.35pm – 10.25pm)

So… what are we actually made of? We’re not taking about the artistic soul of the warrior Gael here – but rather about the ground beneath his feet. What is Ireland made of?

What’s under this green and fertile and stony grey soil? And how much of it is there? And who have we sold it to?

With his divining rod in one hand, his panning pan in his back pack and the metal detector back in the camper van, Hector will set off to find out about the zinc under Navan, the gold in Croagh Patrick and the water in his own back garden.

We’ll talk silver, lead, coal, copper and gas and we’ll talk fracking (why?), we’ll talk turf cutting (why not?) and we’ll talk pipelines !

DOCUMENTARY: A Silent Killer: Savita's Story (TV3, 9pm – 10pm)

This brand-new documentary, exclusive to TV3, examines the heart-breaking story of Savita Halappanavar and her husband Praveen.

In October 2012, they arrived into an Irish maternity ward, unaware that the outcome would be devastating, causing outrage around the world.

This documentary looks at Savita's tragic story and examines what went so tragically wrong for this young couple.

Through a series of storytelling devices, including narration, interviews and reconstructions, the documentary follows a step-by-step account of Savita’s time in Galway hospital, with expert medical opinion examining where the system failed and why.

Using factual evidence taken from the Coroner’s report and the HIQA report, the dramatic reconstructions accurately depict the timeline of events that led to her tragic death.

The documentary includes interviews with Dr. Peter Boylan, key witness at the official enquiry into Savita’s death, Dr. Hema Divakar, President of the Federation of Gynecologists in India, Phil Prendergast, Labour MEP and midwife for 20 years and Dr. Muiris Houston, Medical Correspondent for the Irish Times.

The documentary raises provocative questions relating to Irish maternal care, Catholic ethos, law and the media, and looks for answers to these questions.

DRAMA: The Centre (RTE Two, 10pm - 10.30pm)

Teresa’s world is turned upside down by the arrival of glamorous murder suspect, Amanda Menton (Yasmine Akram).

Amanda is Fieldstown’s only local celebrity, having been accused of the murder of her lover, infamous west Dublin gym boss and gangster Max ‘The Mandroid’ Murphy.

Having (temporarily) escaped conviction for murdering Max, Amanda arrives at the Centre to run a Women In Business course – and kicks off a no-holds barred struggle for power– watched on by the motley crew of staff.

REALITY: One Born Every Minute (Channel 4, 9pm – 10pm)

By now, you should know what to expect from each edition of this series - tears, tantrums and lots and lots of babies.

So expect more of the same as we check in to Southmead Hospital in Bristol once more.

We meet farmer Nick, who thinks he’s well-prepared for partner Rachel giving birth thanks to his knowledge of birthing livestock – expect him to be brought back down to earth!

Meanwhile, Emma and Jordon are fashion addicts, with her even admitting that she completely overhauled his look to suit her taste. But there’s really no time to worry about appearances now, as she goes into labour.

Plus, single mum Heidi asks her best friend Lisa Marie to be her birthing partner, along with Lisa Marie’s mum, Carrie, who used to be a midwife. There are testing times in the delivery room, as Carrie struggles to stay out of things and let newly qualified midwife Sacha get on with her job.

FILM: Hanna (Film4, 9pm – 11.10pm)

(2011) It’s fast-paced action, about a former CIA agent who raises his daughter alone in the wilderness of Finland, teaching her to be the world’s deadliest assassin.

As soon as she turns 16, she’s sent to carry out her one intended mission, however as she travels the world in search of her target, she’s pursued by a CIA operative with a link to her mysterious past.

This is an entertaining character story with solid cinematography, and a stunning performance from lead Saoirse Ronan. This chase thriller is so energetic, you’ll probably need a lie down after watching it - but the plot moves quickly, leaving no room for boredom. The acting is solid all the way through; then again with stars like Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett involved, you’d never expect anything less.

Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana, Tom Hollander
