Kuyt joins Reds

Liverpool have completed the signing of striker Dirk Kuyt from Feyenoord and could hand him a debut in the opening match of the Barclays Premiership season.

Manager Rafael Benitez takes his team to Sheffield United on Saturday and Kuyt is now in contention to play, although it is more likely he will begin on the bench.

Liverpool had only to examine the results of Kuyt’s medical on Friday morning before finalising the signing of the Holland international.

Those results were satisfactory and the 26-year-old now joins a club where he will find competition for places from the likes of Peter Crouch, Craig Bellamy and Robbie Fowler.

The fee for Kuyt remains undisclosed.

“He’ll score a lot of goals for us,” Benitez told www.liverpoolfc.tv.

Liverpool faced competition from Newcastle for Kuyt, with Feyenoord confirming the Magpies had been keen on taking him to St James' Park.

However Kuyt declared Liverpool to be his “dream club” and his arrival has delighted Benitez.

“I am really happy. We were looking at Dirk for a long time and I’m pleased we have signed him because he will be a good player for us,” Benitez told www.liverpoolfc.tv.

“He’s a player with good game intelligence. He knows what to do with the ball and without the ball and he is also a very good worker.

“His movement is good, his finishing is fantastic and I know he will score a lot of goals for us because we now have more possibilities in the wide areas and also between the lines.”
