A post mortem is due to be carried out today on a body found in a shallow grave near Portlaoise in Co Laois yesterday.

A post mortem is due to be carried out today on a body found in a shallow grave near Portlaoise in Co Laois yesterday.

The remains were discovered in a wooded area in Dysart during a dig mounted by Gardaí as part of their search for missing Englishman Tommy Thompson.

The body hasn't been identified, but it is believed to be that of Mr Thomspon, who disappeared last April.

The 59-year-old was working as a plasterer in Portlaoise.

Gardaí say his family have been notified of the latest developments.
