Police in Pakistan have arrested an al-Qaida suspect said to be linked to the July 7, 2005 London bombings, security sources said today.
Officials said they believed the man to be Zabi ul Taifi and that he is from Saudi Arabia.
They say Taifi was among seven suspects captured during a raid yesterday near the north-western city of Peshawar, following a tip-off from US officials.
No Pakistani government spokesman was available for comment.
The bombings on London’s transport system killed 52 people.
Pockets of Pakistan's north-west region bordering Afghanistan are considered havens for al-Qaida and Taliban militants and potential hideouts for al-Qaida leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri.
The US has pushed Pakistan to go after militants, while Pakistan has repeatedly requested that American officials share more intelligence.
The suspects were in Pakistani custody and being questioned, said the officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to media.
One of the security officials said three other Arabs and three Afghans were also rounded up in the Bara Qadeem area.
