Six tiny rare piglets are among the attractions set to pull in the crowds for Dublin Zoo's first-ever harvest festival this weekend.

The inaugural event has been organised to promote the high points of the bountiful time of year and celebrate the end of one of the wettest harvest seasons on record.

The black and white Kune Kune piglets are just over a month old and are settling in well to life in the zoo's 'City Farm' quarter.

Traditionally a celebration of food grown on land the festivities will include demonstrations on butter churning, spinning, weaving and hedgerow basket making.

Leo Oosterweghel, director of Dublin Zoo, said: "This is the first year of the harvest festival at Dublin Zoo and it is set to be a great day of fun for the family.

"We are delighted to be partnered with Agri-Aware and look forward to welcoming our visitors."

Professional storytellers from Dublin City Libraries will contribute to the afternoon's entertainment and visitors will also be able to pick up some fresh produce at the farmers' market.

The harvest festival kicks off this Sunday at 12 noon and runs until 3pm.
