An avalanche hit a group of snowboarders in the mountains near Siberia’s Lake Baikal, killing two and injuring four, a Russian emergency official said.

Those killed were from Switzerland and France, said a duty officer with the Emergency Situations Ministry.

The officer said the two were among a group of 19 snowboarders who were accompanied by two Russian guides in the mountains about 60 miles south of the region’s main city, Irkutsk.

The condition of the remainder of the group was unclear, he said.

Lake Baikal, the world’s largest freshwater lake, is surrounded by sizeable mountain peaks and the region – located about 2,600 miles east of Moscow – is a popular destination for tourists year-round.
