Williams’ preparations for the inaugural Chinese Grand Prix were overshadowed by a serious injury to chief designer Gavin Fisher.
The 40-year-old underwent surgery in Los Angeles after suffering serious injuries in an off-road motorcycling accident in California.
Fisher is in a stable condition but will remain in the United States for around three weeks before being allowed to return to Britain. During his recuperation, his role will be filled by senior designer Mark Loasby.
Williams technical director Sam Michael said: “I spoke to Gavin over the weekend, and thankfully the surgery he underwent immediately after his accident appears to have been successful, but he will be unable to fly back to the UK for some weeks.
“It is fortunate that we have strength in depth in the design office, and Mark Loasby will cover Gavin’s post during his recuperation. We wish Gavin all the best for a speedy recovery.”
