Four men were charged last night in connection with a foiled suspected gang raid on a security van in west Belfast.

They have been accused of robbery and handling stolen goods after a specialist surveillance team pounced on a gang who had allegedly targeted the takings from an off licence.

The suspects, all aged in their 20s, will appear before magistrates in the city today. Two of them also face motoring offences.

The arrests were made on Tuesday after a car smashed into other vehicles and injured two pedestrians.

Police had set up an ambush on the Falls Road as part of the operation to foil a robbery attempt.
