Celtic keeper Douglas set for Scottish No.1 spot

Celtic goalkeeper Rob Douglas has been told he has a golden chance to establish himself as his country’s number one.

Celtic goalkeeper Rob Douglas has been told he has a golden chance to establish himself as his country’s number one.

That status is currently the possession of Neil Sullivan, but the Spurs goalkeeper now finds himself in a vulnerable position.

At the end of last season, Sullivan was ousted at club level by Kasey Keller and has now let in nine goals in two internationals under new manager Berti Vogts.

Four flew past him last night in a 4-1 defeat in South Korea and were added to those conceded in Vogts’ debut, a 5-0 thrashing by France.

Douglas is due to fly in on Sunday to join the touring party having been allowed extra rest after a gruelling but successful club season.

The former Dundee player has long since established himself as the number one choice at Parkhead, with former first pick Jonathan Gould completely out of the picture.

Douglas excelled in a UEFA Cup game at Valencia last season and was finally given his international bow by Vogts last month in a 2-1 Aberdeen friendly defeat by Nigeria.

Vogts wants his strongest team to be available for a Hampden Park friendly with Denmark in August, which will be played just a fortnight before the first Euro 2004 qualifier in the Faroe Islands.

If Douglas is playing well for his club and Sullivan still on the sidelines in north London then the Celtic man can be expected to take the jersey for both matches.

Vogts said: ‘‘I have to look who is number one when Scotland are playing.

‘‘In my first match Neil Sullivan was not the number one at Spurs. I have to look at the situation with Robert and Neil.

‘‘I will have to wait for the new season.’’

Vogts, who has moved his team on to Hong Kong for the second leg of the Far East tour, has to prepare his players for a joust with another country that will be appearing in the finals.

The Scots take on South Africa on Monday in the first game of the Re-unification Cup tournament that also features Turkey and a Hong Kong Select XI.

Vogts unsurprisingly branded the French as favourites, along with Argentina, to lift the World Cup, and tipped the South Koreans to do better than their five previous attempts in the finals.

And he appeared to rate the Nigerians more highly than the South Africans by suggesting the Super Eagles might go as far as the semi-finals.

He said: ‘‘We played well but had bad luck against Nigeria, who won yesterday against the Irish team, also by 2-1.

‘‘Nigeria, and Cameroon too, maybe one of them will go to the semi-final. It is possible.

‘‘All of their players play at the best clubs in Europe.

‘‘I have watched tapes of the South Africans in the African Nations Cup.

‘‘They are one of the best African nations and another strong team. We are happy we can play another qualification team from the World Cup.’’

The local Chinese media were also keen to know if reports that Matt Jansen was about to defect to the Scots were true and Vogts was quick to assure them that this was not the case.

The Blackburn striker had been ignored by England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson for the World Cup, but Vogts appeared to indicate he would not have picked him either.

He said: ‘‘No, I am looking only for good players.

‘‘He is an English guy and has no Scottish grandfather or mother or grandmother.

‘‘Also he played for England in four out of the five qualification matches at under-21. It is not possible for us.’’
