The German government has “the utmost interest” in seeing fugitive Nazi concentration camp doctor Aribert Heim face justice, an official said today.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Saturday that Heim, 91, would soon be arrested by Spanish police. Heim had been at large since he was charged by German authorities in 1962 with killing hundreds of concentration inmates in Germany and Austria with lethal injections.

“You can imagine that, as far as all German authorities are concerned, there is the utmost interest in one of the last big notorious criminals possibly receiving his just punishment after all,” said Interior Ministry spokesman Rainer Lingenthal.

Since the end of the war, Heim has evaded capture in Germany, Argentina, Denmark, Brazil and Spain. During the war, Heim performed sadistic experiments on inmates at the Buchenwald and Mauthausen camps.
