An 80-year-old Swiss man is fighting for his life after having both legs amputated instead of one.

A surgeon at the state hospital in Lugano apparently amputated the wrong leg when operating to remove an arterial blockage.

He is then understood to have operated again to remove the leg which was affected by the blockage.

The surgeon has not been suspended from his duties by the hospital but the state prosecutor has said that proceedings will be taken against him.
