Joe Cooney joins Galway backroom staff

Former Tribesman hurling star Joe Cooney is set to join Conor Hayes' backroom management team.

Former Tribesman hurling star Joe Cooney is set to join Conor Hayes' backroom management team.

He is expected to be joined by another former player, Anthony Cunningham, leaving outgoing selectors Pearse Piggott and Gerry Dempsey out in the cold.

Hayes, who was re-appointed last week, was told by club delegates that a backroom shake-up was needed.

Cooney will be a popular choice, having played in six All-Ireland finals for the Tribesmen, winning two medals.

Cunningham skippered the Galway minor hurlers to All-Ireland success in 1983, before going on to have a distinguished career at senior level. He managed the Roscommon hurlers this year.
