RSA calls for more garda resources after 20% drop in number of breathalyser tests
The chair of the Road Safety Authority has called for greater resources for the Garda Traffic Corps.
Her comments come in the wake of a major reduction in the number of breathalyser tests being carried out by the force.
New figures indicate a fall of 20% in the number of roadside breath tests last year.
RSA chair Liz O'Donnell says enforcement is the key to ensuring motorists do not drink and drive.
"It's human nature to take a chance if they feel that they will not be detected and that's why enforcement really is key," she said.
"All the education and awareness and media strategies that we have worked over the years, and continue to do at enormous expense, will be set at nought if it's not followed through with strict enforcement."
