Justin McNulty is expected to be ratified as the new Laois senior football manager on Monday night.
McNulty's name will go before the Laois County Board Executive at their meeting in Portlaoise on Monday, and should they, as expected, give the current Armagh senior coach their full-backing, his name will come before a full meeting of clubs.
The news will come as a huge disappointment for Laois native Pat Roe, who was overlooked for the position in both 2006 and 2008.
He allowed his name to go forward for a third time recently, and Mick O'Dwyer and Ollie Phelan were also nominated to become Sean Dempsey's successor in the position.
Roe, the former Carlow, Wexford and Offaly manager, was in charge of the Laois U-21s this year and was favoured for the senior role, given his level of experience and local knowledge.
However, it now seems that Laois will plump for a man from outside the county. Darragh O Se and Padraic Joyce were both reportedly approached but ruled themselves out of the equation.
Should McNulty be appointed, Laois will be hoping he can mirror the success that his Armagh 2002 All-Ireland winning team-mate, Kieran McGeeney, has been having of late with Kildare.
McNulty was part of Paddy O'Rourke's Armagh backroom team this season, and his managerial experience includes a Cavan club title with Mullahoran in 2006 and a Dublin club final appearance with St. Brigid's in 2007.
