Nokia has announced an alliance with America Online to develop a new browser for use with WAP-enabled mobile phones.
Under the licensing agreement, AOl will develop a Netscape-branded version of the navigation software and actively promote its use across a variety of mobile communications devices.
Both firms say that the move represents a concerted effort to foster a more vibrant experience for WAP users.
President of AOL wireless Dennis Patrick said: "WAP is the most widely adopted wireless standard in the world among carriers and handset manufacturers alike and it makes sense for us to work to support that standard."
Wireless Application Protocol has so far received a lukewarm response from a public otherwise besotted with mobile communication.
According to research conducted by Egg last November, only 2% of the UK's mobile phone customers elected to buy a web-enabled handset.
