The murder of a man shot dead in the North was a throwback to the dark days of its violent past, politicians said today.

The man’s semi-naked body was found last night on the outskirts of Derry, close to the border with Co Donegal.

Sinn Féin and SDLP politicians who visited the area where the body was found on the Braehead Road described the scene as “horrific”.

The MP for Foyle, Mark Durkan of the SDLP, condemned the shooting.

“The people of Derry will be disgusted and appalled to learn of this murder,” he said.

“This morning, I attended the scene of where the body was found and I have spoken to the police about this horrific killing.

“On behalf of the SDLP, I totally and absolutely condemn this brutal and crude murder which is a throwback to the very worst of our past.”

The victim has yet to be identified.
