Vodafone Derby fifth Fight Your Corner is recovering from surgery today following a serious leg injury suffered during the course of the Epsom Classic.
But hopes are high that the damage to the Mark Johnston-trained colt, who was only added to the blue riband at a cost of £90,000 a week before the event, will not prove to be life-threatening.
‘‘He has fractured the hind canon-bone,’’ said the Middleham trainer.
‘‘It is not thought to be life-threatening so long as all goes well.
Fight Your Corner had stamped himself as a Classic contender when landing the Victor Chandler Chester Vase by two and a half lengths from Sparkling Water last month.
He was not entered in the Epsom showpiece by his Middleham trainer but was subsequently purchased by Sheikh Mohammed for one of his sons and connections duly opted to pay the lofty supplementary fee.
The news surrounding Fight Your Corner cast a further shadow over the race, which also saw the Michael Jarvis-trained Coshocton humanely destroyed after he fractured his near-fore leg.
Coshocton, winner of the Predominate Stakes at Goodwood on his last start, had been in the process of running a huge race when he faltered sideways towards the stands and fell before the line.
