Kenny: Govt has not abandoned plans to cut bailout interest rate

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny is denying he has abandoned plans to try and get a reduction in Ireland's bailout interest rate.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny is denying he has abandoned plans to try and get a reduction in Ireland's bailout interest rate.

Mr Kenny has clashed with the Fianna Fáíl leader Micheál Martin in the Dáil over the fact that 99 days into the new Government’s rule; a rate cut has not been secured.

Mr Martin said that there has not been progress and things are actually going backwards.

The Taoiseach, however, has denied this and has insisted that work on securing the rate reduction is continuing.

“Let me assure you that we (Government) have not abandoned at all our negotiations with this matter,” Mr Kenny said.

“In respect of diplomatic offensive, you are aware that the Tánaiste recalled all of our own ambassadors.

“We’ve also called in the European ambassadors to explain to them (EU/IMF) what Ireland’s strategy is.”
