More than 100 inmates have escaped after gunmen attacked a federal prison in Nigeria and killed one guard.

The attack occurred in Koton-Karifi, a town just south of the nation’s capital of Abuja.

A prisons spokesman said 118 prisoners escaped after the gunmen attacked on Wednesday night.

He gave no other details about the violence. No one has claimed responsibility yet for the attack.

A radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram launched a massive prison break in Bauchi state in September 2010 that freed about 700 inmates there.
