A murder inquiry was launched today after a woman was found stabbed to death in Co Derry.

The body of 43-year-old mother of two Gillian Doherty was discovered at her home at Mill Road, Portstewart, Co Derry.

It is understood she was a victim of a domestic row. Police later arrested a man.

John Dallat, an SDLP Assembly member for East Derry, said a pattern of domestic murders was emerging in Northern Ireland.

He added: “It is important the British government study the causes and how it can provide better support services to help people who are at risk in relation to domestic violence.”

Mrs Doherty was the second stabbing victim to die in Northern Ireland in 24 hours.

Detectives are still questioning a man after Thomas Moore, 60, died when he was attacked at a flat in Dufferin Avenue, Bangor, Co Down.

A youth who was with him at the time needed surgery for multiple injuries.
