Kenny unhappy with Bank of Ireland interest rate hike

"I don't like this" was the verdict of the Taoiseach Enda Kenny on a hike in interest rates on credit cards by Bank of Ireland but he admits he is powerless to do anything about it.

The bank is increasing rates on various cards by up to 4%.

Mr Kenny says the bank is owned by private investors with just a 15% state shareholding.

“I don’t like this situation, applicable three or four days before Christmas, but this is a commercial entity and they have made this decision.

“We will respond to the regulator, who is completely independent, if the regulator requests more appropriate powers."
