Costello: State should withdraw pensions from guilty politicians

Junior Minister Joe Costello has called for a referendum to change the Constitution so that politicians found guilty of misconduct can have their pensions withdrawn.

Junior Minister Joe Costello has called for a referendum to change the Constitution so that politicians found guilty of misconduct can have their pensions withdrawn.

He was commenting on the publication of the Mahon Tribunal report, which found that former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern failed to truthfully account for some of his funds.

Minister Costello said people who have held high office in the past, and have subsequently been found guilty of misconduct, should not be drawing pensions from the public purse.
