Trouble has broken out in Belfast as Orangemen returned to the city centre from their annual twelfth of July parades.

A number of policemen have been injured while trying to keep loyalists and nationalists apart in the Ardoyne area.

Last night there were disturbances in Portadown, where police officers fired water cannon after being bombarded with petrol bombs and missiles.

Assistant Chief Constable of the RUC Stephen White is defending the forces action: "Bricks, a range of missiles including fireworks, but most particularly blast bombs, now this is where the whole tenor of the situation changes."

" We are talking about attempted murder of police officers here," he added.
