Reid double widens A1GP lead

New Zealand’s Jonny Reid took a double win in Indonesia as Germany extended their lead at the top of the A1GP standings.

New Zealand’s Jonny Reid took a double win in Indonesia as Germany extended their lead at the top of the A1GP standings.

Reid turned pole position into into New Zealand’s first victory in A1GP in the sprint race and then added feature race success later on.

Consistency paid off once again for Germany’s Nico Hulkenberg as he stretched his country’s lead in the overall standings as a mistake by Britain’s Robbie Kerr when in fourth saw him fail to finish the feature race.

In a rain-affected feature race at Sentul, Reid won by just over two seconds from Hulkenberg and France’s Nicolas Lapierre.

Reid fought off the early attempts of Mexico’s Salvador Duran and Kerr for the lead as Hulkenberg joined the fight.

Kerr took over in second ahead of Hulkenberg and South Africa’s Alan van der Merwe who had moved up from eighth to demote Duran into fourth by the end of the first lap.

Once Hulkenberg got past Reid he stretched ahead until the first round of pit stops and even a run into the gravel at turn two on lap 19 could not keep the German out of the lead.

Reid retook the lead at the next set of stops as drivers changed to slick tyres on a drying track and held on for the win.

“It was not a straightforward race at all and the weather came in and played a big part in that race,” said Reid.

“After the start of the race I was struggling quite a lot and at the pit stop we made a change and the car was much, much better.

“I snatched back the lead and pushed hard to get a gap. We put a lot of push on at the end and I just got my head down.”

Kerr was looking good for another podium spot until Lapierre caught and passed him down the straight on lap 34.

Kerr looked set for a comfortable fourth until he ran wide at turn four on lap 39, spun and stalled.

The safety car came out for five minutes as Kerr’s car was recovered the when it left the circuit the race became a sprint to the finish with only three minutes remaining.

Reid held on to win as Hulkenberg’s second strengthened Germany’s position as points leaders.

He said: “On my second set of tyres I made a mistake and I don’t know what was wrong the car was much worse. I had oversteer, understeer and it was just much, much worse than before.”

Lapierre was pleased with France’s fourth podium of the year.

He said: “It was a pretty good race for us considering our starting position. The race was okay.

“We struggled a bit at the beginning with the first set of tyres, I don’t know why exactly.”

Italy finished fourth after starting 15th on the grid and Holland looked set for fifth until the stewards threw them out of the results for infringing rules covering the timing of the mandatory pit stop.

Reid took the sprint race win ahead of Mexico and Britain with the USA’s Phil Giebler in fourth, Germany fifth and Australia’s Ryan Briscoe sixth.

Germany lead the points standings on 48 ahead of Britain on 36, Mexico on 34 and France with 32.
