No expulsion for UCD students who threw eggs at Taoiseach

UCD student publication The College Tribune has reported that the three students who threw eggs towards the Taoiseach during an official visit will not face expulsion.

Enda Kenny was greeted by the hostile reception as he officially opened UCD's new student centre November 29 last year.

The eggs missed their intended target but UCD's vice president for students Martin Butler was caught in the crossfire.

Suzanne Lee, Aidan Rowe and Ben McCormack were handed a suspended €200 fine and a formal reprimand and were also instructed to write a letter of apology to Mr Butler, which the trio have agreed to do.

Before the hearing this morning, Ms Lee said that she did not regret her actions.

"I'm not from a background that most students in this university are,” she said. “I worked before I came here…I would rather defend people like me and their access to education and if that requires me getting expelled, (so be it).

"If we had stood outside and chanted things and had banners, there would never have been as much media coverage as there was of what we wanted to get across, which is that people should not be stopped from obtaining third-level education."
