Late point earns draw for Wexford

Diarmuid Lyng landed a late free from 85 metres out as Wexford salvaged a draw with Clare in a high-scoring NHL Division 2 clash at Cusack Park.

Lyng was Wexford's top scorer as they recovered from a 1-13 to 0-6 deficit, after 30 minutes' play, to pick up what could prove to be a vital league point.

Clare and Wexford are joint top of the table after the third round of matches, with the Banner men taking the lead in the fourth minute when U-21 star Darach Honan bulged the visitors' net with a lovely strike off his left.

Points from Brian O'Connell, John Conlon, Colin Ryan and Honan had Clare 1-4 to 0-3 ahead. Wexford's opening three points came from Rory Jacob (0-2) and Lyng.

Clare were in total control coming up to half-time, armed with a ten-point cushion, and it would have been more had Honan fired home his second goal-scoring chance.

Crucially, Wexford got back in touch before the break. Points from Jacob, Lyng, Tomas Waters and Harry Kehoe sandwiched a goal from Jacob as Colm Bonnar's men made it 1-14 to 1-10 for half-time.

Kehoe and Colm Farrell were doing well around centre-field and although Colin Ryan took his tally to eight as Clare remained ahead, Wexford were still very much in the hunt.

Efforts from Stephen Banville, Andrew Shore, Farrell, Kehoe and Lyng saw the gap closed to three points.

Clare replied almost immediately but a second Jacob goal, after Banville had teed him up, and Lyng's late leveller produced a thrilling draw.
