Injuries build for Dom's Sligo heroes
Sligo's footballers emerged 1-11 to 1-10 victors over Kildare yesterday at Markievicz Park, adding pace to their qualifier charge - but the win came at a cost.
The Yeats men finished off their second round victory with 14 men on the field as Eamonn O'Hara (knee), Brian Curran (hamstring) and Brendan Egan (leg) were all injured during the course of the game, while Sligo corner forward Kenneth Sweeney also picked up a knock.
Egan left the field on 69 minutes with his injury, but Sligo boss Dom Corrigan had already used all of his five substitutes.
Midfielder O'Hara, a 2002 All-Star, will be the biggest of Corrigan's concerns ahead of Sligo's third round clash with Clare in a fortnight's time.
O'Hara left the ground on crutches, but whatever his line-up against the Banner men, Corrigan knows beating Kildare brought his side "on a tonne".
"It looked a little desperate for us going into the final 15 minutes," said the former Fermanagh manager yesterday.
"They got a goal to go five points up but we absorbed the pressure and kept our cool. Gerry McGowan, John McPartland and Dessie Sloyan all knuckled down.
"We had to recover from some early setbacks such as the injuries to O'Hara and Curran, but we did.
"I know there is plenty of room for improvement but we provided answers to the questions when Kildare asked them.
"We'll be much the better because of this game," added Corrigan.
