Tyrone's Gormley keen for Ulster success

Tyrone's Conor Gormley is eagerly anticipating the start of the Martin Donnelly Interprovincial football championship and a chance to get stuck into major action once again in the 'off-season.'

Gormley believes that the experienced management team which Ulster have will stand them in good stead for the competition.

"With Brian McEniff and Art McRory involved with this Ulster team, it certainly helps," the defender admitted.

"They have been in charge for a long number of years and they are good men to have in charge and we are glad to have them. We'll give it a lash and see how it goes."

Although the talented Tyrone player has tasted All-Ireland glory, he certainly values his Interprovincial medal and is hoping for another one this year, but with Leinster going for a three-in-a-row of titles, Gormley knows that nothing will come easy over the next few weeks.

"I've one interprovincial medal at the moment and of course you want to have more medals. It would be nice to have another one but we play Connacht in the first game and we can't be talking about winning the competition already. Connacht will be a tough game for us and we'll have to see how that goes for us first of all."

Having won the Ulster crown in July, Tyrone faded from the All-Ireland series, something which certainly disappointed Gormley but he is confident that with injuries coming right and a renewed hunger, the Red Hands will once again be challenging for major honours next year.

"Every team sets out to get to an All-Ireland final and it was disappointing to go out against Meath. We just didn't perform on the day and we let ourselves down badly and didn't perform. We now have to look to next year.

"Injuries to key men were a big loss to us and it probably showed at the business end of the season that you need your top forwards there. We were missing a couple of them but we have to give credit to Meath at the end of the day who came out and performed well. They won the game and that's the way it goes, we have to look to next year now."

Gormley is glad to report that progress is being made on the Tyrone injury front in the off-season.

"Stephen (O'Neill) is going for an operation shortly while Brian Dooher has one of them over with and hopefully Brian McGuigan will be back - he is doing a bit on his own at the minute.

"Hopefully with all of those lads back and the new blood coming in, it will bring a renewed freshness to the whole thing and I look forward to next year."

Gormley was also very satisfied to see Mickey Harte agree to stay on as Tyrone manager for another two seasons.

"I think you need consistency in management and you can't argue with Mickey Harte's record. He has proven that he can win All-Irelands and I'm happy enough so long as I get a jersey on the McKenna Cup day."
